About The Event

The wild & silly creatures of the valley are delighted and very excited to welcome Snow King & Lady Spring … and all of you! … back to Spirit Square on Saturday evening February 12! Yay!

Because of Omicron speeding its way through the community in December and January, we knew that we could not gather folks of all ages safely in the Snow King’s Playhouse this year to create the various activities that make up the big Pageant in the Square. But, we figured out that we could safely go back to our early days and have a downtown Parade and then come back into the Square for a concert.

Once we thought of the idea of an outdoor concert in Spirit Square in February, Shred Kelly was our ‘bang on’ first choice! Coming from Fernie, we know they appreciate wild and silly creatures cavorting in the snow all winter long! They really tore it up at Summer Kicks too for over 800 fans last July! Once we reached out and they said “Yes”, we knew we had something now that would be both safe and very exciting. On top of that, we will close out the evening with fireworks up in the sky over the Square.

The MasqueParade hearkens back to a time when neighbours joined together to make their own entertainment and bring meaning to their lives through celebration. For you folks with long memories of MasqueParades past, you’ll remember a ceremony from 2013 that is very appropriate and timely to enact this year after almost two years of pandemic. And we need YOU! … all of the wild & silly creatures of the valley … to help create this ceremony for the MasqueParade … and you can do it at home around the dinner table, or at work in a staff lunch rooms, in the class room, or in the Club House…. wherever you gather in your ‘bubbles”.

Here’s what Snow King needs from you. With your energy, the Chain of Fears and Wish Flags ceremony will be a moving and celebratory part of this year’s MasqueParade.

MP-2022-Chain of Fears How To Sheet
From your contribution, we will create a paper chain of “Fears” that folks of all ages in the community will make on a piece of craft paper. We will collect those paper links and then join them together in one very long Chain that A-Muse Troupe will parade through the crowd before scrunching the Chain into a big ball and tossing it on to the Bonfire! [See How To photo below]

MP-2022-Wish Flags How To Sheet-2
While you and yours are writing a Fear on a paper chain link, we also ask that you cut a piece of scrap cloth to 7” x 14”  (17cm x 35cm) into a design shape you like then write or paint a “Wish” on the cloth. All of the Wish Flags contributed by the community will be strung on long lengths of rope.

After the Chain of Fears is burned, A-Muse Troupe will ceremoniously parade the Wish Flags through the crowd so we can send our Wishes out into the world. As the wind blows the flags, the wishes are carried upon the air and everyone who feels the wind’s breath upon your cheek is touched by a wish and perhaps……. your wish will come true! Oh… and one more thing we need you to do…!

Noisy Fancy Dress Parade
Here in the mountains, we go out dressed in layers right! Well, what better way to to dress up on a winter’s evening than to put your ‘dress up” clothes on OVER TOP of your warm winter clothes! Just like these wonderful silly creatures from Newfoundland! Anything goes… the sillier the better! Wear your personal mask and then put another mask over top of that!

And if you have something to make some wonderful musical noise with to help us keep the beat…even the better!
