About The Event
Inspired by Métis artist Christi Belcourt’s painting Medicines to Help Us, La Mitchin di Mitchif is a heartfelt tribute to the intergenerational teachings passed down in Métis culture and the Indigenous relations to Mother Earth.
A few words from the Artistic Director…
As Artistic Director of V’ni Dansi, I am continually inspired by my beautiful culture and hold dance as a sacred practice which touches the soul and nurtures the spirit. I am delighted to share, La Mitchin di Mitchif. In 2009, Rulan Tangen – Dancing Earth’s Artistic Director – invited me to participate in a gathering of International Indigenous contemporary dance choreographers where we explored themes of seeds and our connection to Mother earth. La Mitchin di Mitchif brings attention to plant medicines, their uses, and the intimate journey of connection of each individual to the medicines that call them. Intergenerational teachings are reclaimed and passed from Elders to youth, honoring the vital connection between plants and pollination by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, for the survival of all.
About V’ni Dansi
V’ni Dansi is a traditional Métis and contemporary dance company dedicated to sharing the dances, stories and culture of the Métis. It was founded in 2000 in Vancouver, BC. Led by Artistic Director, Yvonne Chartrand, V’ni Dansi holds the distinction of being the only company in Canada dedicated to both Métis and contemporary dance. Meaning “come and dance” in Mitchif, V’ni Dansi is thrilled to share the Métis people’s joyful culture with audiences of all nations. V’ni Dansi’s Louis Riel Métis Dancers specialize in traditional Métis dance and are dedicated to preserving traditional Métis dances. Traditional dances have been acquired from Metis Elders and knowledge keepers who were part of the “M éis kitchen parties” that have preserved the dances throughout generations. We believe that our dance is sacred and healing for our audiences.
