About The Event

“Living” is a poignant 2022 British drama helmed by director Oliver Hermanus, featuring a screenplay penned by Kazuo Ishiguro. This compelling film draws inspiration from various sources, including the 1952 Japanese classic “Ikiru” directed by Akira Kurosawa, which, in turn, was partly influenced by Leo Tolstoy’s 1886 Russian novella “The Death of Ivan Ilyich.” The story unfolds in 1953 London and revolves around a dedicated bureaucrat (portrayed by the talented Bill Nighy) in the county’s Public Works department who grapples with a life-threatening illness.

“Living” made its grand debut at the prestigious 2022 Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2022. Subsequently, it captivated audiences in the United Kingdom when it was released on November 4, 2022, courtesy of Lionsgate. The film garnered widespread acclaim from critics, with Bill Nighy’s exceptional performance earning him particular praise. Notably, “Living” secured nominations at the 95th Academy Awards for Best Actor (Bill Nighy) and Best Adapted Screenplay.

“The ‘Love Actually’ actor turns this story of a dying man in 1950s London into a class on less-is-more performances — and something more profound than just a period-piece remake.” Rolling Stone
