Please note that each day runs for four hours.
Day One: Foundational Skills
Including stilt repair and maintenance, balance, mounting and dismounting, walking techniques, and building confidence at height. Participants will work together to develop trust, resilience, and physical awareness while learning safe and effective stilt practices.
Day Two: Creative Exploration
Participants will be guided through character development, movement quality, and costume concepts. Using the stilts as an extension of the body, participants will explore how posture, gesture, and design choices bring stilt characters to life, with an emphasis on visual storytelling and ensemble work.
Fees and Additional Info
This workshop is intended for youth ages 12–18. Adults are welcome to participate if space permits. This experience is ideal for youth interested in performance, movement, circus arts, or creative expression, and for those looking to contribute stilt characters to EmberFest programming.

What to Wear:
This is a physical workshop, so you’ll want to wear whatever is comfortable to move around in. We suggest no jeans or restrictive clothing. There will also be times that you’ll be sitting and observing, so bring a layer for warmth.
Hygiene:
Equipment will be shared among participants. In consideration of everyone’s health, we kindly ask that anyone experiencing symptoms of illness or any potentially transmissible condition refrain from participating.
About the Artist
For the past 33 years Randall Fraser has created theatre and special events in Edmonton, Alberta, and around the world. As a founding member of the Trickster Theatre Residency program, he has directed and developed 100’s of plays and performances with students from K-12. He is also an award winning set, lighting, prop and costume designer, a puppet designer, performer, and instructor. Randall’s passion is to use the theatre and performing arts as a way of connecting people to their own creativity and being creative as part of a group or community. When not making theatre, Randall is the founding Artistic Director of the National Stiltwalkers of Canada, and can be found at festival’s and celebrations towering over the crowd sharing “high-fives”, and High Spirited Fun.
