About The Event
Qairo (pronounced Cairo) is a passionate and innovative septet whose pan-Mediterranean sound combines the fire of flamenco with a heady blend of Turkish micro-tonality, highly charged Balkan rhythms, and spicy Middle Eastern melodies.
Singer Alejandro Mendia and dancers Lia Grainger and Deborah “La Caramelita” were part of a popular flamenco ensemble for years before merging with flamenco guitarist Manuel Vazquez and clarinetist and saxophonist Dorian Zavatta. Their goal was to create a radical musical hybrid, and with the addition of percussionist Alex Carrasco and drummer Gaetan Diaz, Cairo hit paydirt. Onstage they unleash a firestorm of music and dance that is rooted in centuries-old folk traditions yet taps into a modern, freewheeling eclecticism that crackles with chemistry. Find out why CBC Radio said, “Qairo’s music has no boundaries.”
