Terra Lightfoot hails from Hamilton, Ontario and is a blues-rock guitar goddess with a blazingly bright future. She started out as a folkie-flavoured singer-songwriter nearly a decade ago but soon plugged into the world of electric guitar riffs and wailing vocals – more Joan Jett than Joni Mitchell, if you will.
Blessed with a killer multi-octave mezzo-soprano voice and ferociously virtuosic guitar skills, the charismatic Lightfoot is also an onstage powerhouse with loads of rock-star flair. What used to be a hook-heavy, power-pop style has evolved into an authoritative mix of vivid soul, tasty hard rock, and blues-rock power ballads.
And Lightfoot is really generating some buzz: in March of 2018 she and her Gibson SG guitar got a splashy spread in Guitar Player Magazine. She followed that with the release of her newest CD, New Mistakes, whose raw power and musical finesse was acknowledged with a Juno nomination for “adult alternative album of the year.”
By turns raunchy and vulnerable, Lightfoot has clearly broken through. Her songwriting is more accessible, too: whether it’s a punchy combination of blues and gospel to sell the erotic thrills of “Hold You” or the lower-key drama of the soulful “Norma Gale,” she and her band can now generate arena-filling music that passionately embraces rock, Americana, soul, blues, and alt-folk. As one fawning reviewer noted recently: “Get ready to adore Terra Lightfoot, a roots rocker with a powerful voice and a badass Gibson SG that she plays with consummate ease. Yep, she could be your new rock ‘n’ roll hero.”
Combining nuanced musicality with crowd-pleasing panache, Lightfoot is clearly a star in the making.
