Sultans of String

“Christmas Caravan” will make you
believe that Santa sure knows how to party!

Golden Civic Centre

For a decade the Toronto-based Sultans of String have been wowing audiences around the globe with their virtuosic musicianship and unique blend of flamenco, Arabic folk, Celtic reels, Cuban and South Asian rhythms, and Manouche-style gypsy jazz.

Hailed by one reviewer for their “perfect balance between brainy composition and fun execution,” these players without borders have a unique take on world music that pairs acoustic strings with electronic magic, and funk with soul. The result is groove-based bliss that excites the senses and creates an irresistible urge to dance.

These royally talented Sultans have been nominated for three Junos, won numerous awards and accolades, and performed everywhere from elite festivals to NYC’s iconic jazz club, Birdland. And when this quintet comes to town for December, they’ve got a special seasonal treat to unwrap for the audience. Their latest CD, Christmas Caravan, made it to #6 on Billboard’s World Music Chart and got great press all over the United States and Britain.

An enchanting mix of originals and reworked Christmas classics – including a Feliz Navidad ska party, a Turkish twist on Greensleeves, and Jingle Bells warmed up with flamenco fire – this “Christmas Caravan” revue will make you believe that Santa sure knows how to party.

Although the Sultans aren’t able to bring along all the guest artists who enlivened their remarkable CD, they will be joined by vocalist Rebecca Campbell, a 30-year veteran of the music scene who’s sung with the likes of Lynn Miles, Parachute Club, Jane Siberry, and Bill Usher. Merry Christmas indeed!

Recorded around the world, this beautiful video shows the making of the Christmas Caravan album with star cameo appearances by Sweet Honey in the Rock, Alex Cuba, the Chieftains’ Paddy Maloney and many, many more.

Unfortunately, way too many people have attempted Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah … but, Rebecca Campbell’s tribute with Sultans of String is very worthy, indeed.
