Ridley Bent

“A beat-poet Country troubadour with an outlaw spirit”

Golden Civic Centre

With five albums and seven BCCMA awards under his hat, countrified singer-songwriter Ridley Bent has evolved into one of the most insightful and engaging performers in Canada. His newest records, Rabbit On My Wheel and Wildcard, have songs that resemble short stories, full of hard-won insights and fascinating characters as he fearlessly tackles strong themes like desperation, ambition, love, and loneliness.

That skillful writing bristles with dark humour and a novelist’s feel for plot twists and unexpected sentiment – there are echoes of the bleak insights of writers such as John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy in these tales. But even though Ridley’s characters are as hard-drinking and fast-driving as ever, they don’t seem quite as hell-bent on self-destruction. And all that pathos and drama come fully alive thanks to great performances and inspired musicianship. No mere “country crooner,” the versatile Ridley seamlessly incorporates elements of hip-hop, rockabilly and even some good old rock ‘n’ roll into a kickass live show that has wowed audiences all across the country.
