Irish Mythen

The larger-than-life Irish Mythen is a powerful voice telling powerful tales.

You know an artist has won over the crowd when she gets a standing ovation in the middle of her performance. That happened to Irish Mythen at last summer’s Island MusicFest in Courtenay, where the five-foot-nothing performer was standing tall as one of the “buzz acts” at the popular festival. The P.E.I-based Mythen – she moved to the Maritimes from Ireland in 2007 – is a well-travelled troubadour who has taken her larger-than-life solo act from the Sydney Opera House to the muddy fields at Glastonbury where she performed for over 100,000 people.

After a decade of hard slogging to learn her craft and make a reputation for herself, Mythen has seen her career really take off in the last few years. She’s been winning awards, did a tour with Melissa Etheridge, and gets laudatory press in the pages of Guitar Magazine and Rolling Stone. Despite writing socially conscious songs, she prefers to call herself an entertainer moreso than a singer-songwriter: this Irish-born force of nature is a charismatic storyteller who can connect with any audience.

Often outspoken and loud, the protest-minded Mythen tackles subjects like the cruel abuses of the Catholic Church or the plight of refugees the world has turned its back on. Then suddenly she’ll turn down the volume and sing 55 Years, a tender heartbreaker about an old man she met, recently a widower, who was suddenly sleeping alone after more than a half century of marriage.

Still need convincing? By vote, the three most requested artists to return to the Mariposa Folk Festival have been Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, . . . and Irish Mythen. So don’t you dare miss this debut!
