Golden Civic Centre

Founded in 2002, Ballet Kelowna is the only professional dance company in the B.C. Interior and performs primarily for smaller centres in British Columbia and Alberta. The company’s fortunes advanced notably in 2014 when Simone Orlando took over as artistic director and CEO. An award-winning choreographer who formerly danced with Ballet BC and the National Ballet of Canada, Orlando has significantly increased the profile of Ballet Kelowna, which currently performs annually for over 12,000 audience members, both locally and on the road.

They are also well known for their outreach programs, and are taking the opportunity while in Golden to sponsor a community workshop on Saturday and give a performance for school students on Monday morning. But the centrepiece of their visit on Sunday evening will be a presentation of MAMBO and Other Works, a mixed program featuring recent pieces by three of this country’s most important choreographers.

Wen Wei Wang is represented by 1723 – Vivaldi, a mesmerizing sextet that showcases gorgeous partnering and brilliant pointe work for the women. This is followed by Cuatro Estaciones, an innovative new work by Simone Orlando that is set to iconic composer Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires and features a fiery fusion of contemporary ballet with the intricate expressiveness of Argentine Tango.

And the evening culminates with the crowd-pleasing sizzle of MAMBO, an ebullient and highly rhythmic piece by Alysa Pires that is danced to Latin swing and jazz tunes performed by Dean Martin, Julie London, Louis Prima, and Rosemary Clooney.

This performance always sells out so be sure to get your tickets early.
