In the perfectly named 6 Guitars, Chase Padgett delivers a virtuosic performance as he embodies six different guitar players — each with his own distinct voice, attitude to life, and musical style. Ranging from an octogenarian bluesman to a head-banging metal freak to a nerdy and self-effacing folkie, these brilliantly drawn characters share their personal history with the guitar – and sometimes offer hilariously disdainful comments on rival guitar genres.
Fall-to-the-floor funny!
Padgett really knows his music, and really knows how to play guitar; the resulting show is a captivating mix of showmanship, musicology, and storytelling. And aside from his other notable gifts, Padgett is an inspired improv comic: his interactions with the audience on the night I saw the show were fall-to-the-floor funny. Aside from various honours and awards this unique one-man show was hailed “Pick of the Fringe” at both the Edmonton and Vancouver Fringe Festivals. Hilarious, charming, and at times surprisingly poignant, 6 Guitars is a show so good you’ll want to see it twice.
