Tom Allen’s
The Judgment of Paris

“On the brink of the Great War, Debussy and Ravel are vying for the love of their darling, Paris, The City of Light.”

Listen to Tom Allen describe his personal journey and the background story to creating this “chamber musical” entitled The Judgment of Paris. Tom is as personable and informative when he’s being interviewed (by KHC’s Bill Usher) as he is when he’s hosting his CBC Radio 2 show SHIFT. This podcast ends with a show stopping performance of “My One and Only” by Kevin Fox. Enjoy.

Judgment of Paris Poster-500People who listen to CBC Radio are familiar with the voice of Tom Allen – host of Shift on Radio 2. His programs are always filled with interesting facts about the selection, the composer or about our times. Not too many know he is an accomplished musician. Together with his musical friends, cellist Kevin Fox as Debussy, pianist Bryce Kulak as Ravel, vocalist Patricia O’Callaghan as Paris, and harpist Lori Gemmell—all stars in their own right—Tom Allen has created The Judgment of Paris, a mix of cabaret, history and story-telling with timeless music by Debussy and Ravel, as well as original songs by the performers. It is new and old, heroic and tragic, history and fiction – and may the best composer win.

Let The Judgment of Paris sweep you away with the music and passion of another era set in one of the greatest cities in the world.

THE JUDGMENT OF PARIS is part of a series of staged chamber musicals combined with storytelling brought into existence by Tom Allen with the fellow artists Bryce Kulak, Lori Gemmell, Kevin Fox and Patricia O’Callaghan. The idea was to reflect the history and mythology of the great composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel through their music and stories, alongside newly created songs that reflect those same composers’ experiences in a modern context. Bryce Kulak and Kevin Fox remain in character as rivals Ravel and Debussy, while Patricia O’Callaghan plays the role of Paris.

THE JUDGMENT OF PARIS was commissioned by the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival and Music Niagara, with support from SoulPepper Theatre. Christopher Newton, previous Artistic Director for the Shaw Festival, provided direction and input and Ken MacKenzie of SoulPepper provided set design.

The soundtrack for the show has not been recorded yet–coming this Spring–but, Tom Allen has graciously shared three musical tracks that give you a sense of what a treat you’re in for.

is performed by Kevin Fox.

Maurice ravel’s Habanera is performed by Lori Gemmel.

Tom also provided us with a cabaret piece by Bryce Kulack to give you a sense of the cabaret musical style of his contributions to the score.
