Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, 7:30pm: REBELLE (WAR WITCH)

rebelle-posterNominated for best foreign language film at the 2013 Academy Awards, Rebelle is a harrowing film about survival. The film is narrated by 14 year old Komona (Rachel Mwanza) who recounts the past two years of her life in war torn sub-Saharan Africa to her unborn child.

Abducted by a rebel army and forced into killing her parents, Komona is inducted into the brutal lifestyle of the child soldier. One day she has a vision and is the only person to escape unscathed from a ferocious fire-fight. Impressed by her premonitory powers, warlord Great Tiger bestows her with the title “War Witch”, a position which earns her privileges but also the threat of harsh punishment if her powers fail. The only bright spot in her life is a young albino boy, Magicien.

Montreal based film maker, Kim Nguyen selected former street child Rachel Mwanza to play the lead role after watching her in a documentary on street kids in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She went on to win Best Actress awards at both the Berlin and Tribeca Film Festivals.

Rebelle won 10 awards at the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress & Best Supporting Actor
