Francis Hern book reading at Bacchus – 7pm, Mon. Dec. 5

For book buffs, local author Francis Hern will be presenting and reading from her new book titled Yip Sang and the First Chinese Canadians at Bacchus Books on Monday December 5th at 7 p.m.

Yip Sang sailed to North America in 1864, hoping for a better life. He eventually joined a wagon train travelling north to the B.C. goldfields but making a fortune wasn’t as easy as it sounded, especially for Chinese Canadians. Nancy’s book follows the struggles and successes of three generations of the Yip family through two world wars and the great depression. It also explores why so many Chinese wanted to move to Canada and how Canada’s evolving immigration laws made this difficult for them.
