Civic Centre Opens this New Year’s 2011!

Golden Star front page ad circa Dec. 1948

Well… not too much longer to wait now. Only 41 sleeps before we open the doors to the brand new, old Civic Centre on Dec. 29th, 2011.

It was 63 years ago that the first dance was held in the Civic Centre on Dec. 31st, 1948. And get this, there was no plumbing… and, no heat.

That didn’t come to 9 months later. They heated the building with woodstoves set around the hall with the chimneys stuck through the window frames! And, as for the plumbing, well I guess lots of folks were making trips outside.

Lots of people have been asking what’s going to happen, and now we can tell you. Click here to see a schedule overview of the 3 day opening festivities. And, then click here to look at the Jamboree celebrations – the BIG concert (30th) and the GREAT BIG New Year’s Dance (31st) – we have planned.

FYI one of the meanings for the word Jamboree is “a loud and raucous party.” And, that’s what it’s going to be. Over the next few weeks, we’ll give you more details on the various FREE events and send you off to explore websites on the various performers flying in to Golden especially for the Jamboree.

Keep in mind though, there will only be 300 tickets sold for the Jamboree concert and New Year’s Dance each. Ticket’s will go on sale next Tuesday morning Nov. 22nd. Don’t be disappointed. This party only comes along every 63 years.

The Opening Celebrations are presented by Kicking Horse Culture and brought to you by the Town of Golden with the participation of the Government of Canada.
