Fans of Tom Waits, the musical Cabaret, early jazz, and classical music will be fascinated and delighted by Tom Allen’s From Weimar to Vaudeville.
CBC Radio listeners will doubtless be familiar with the voice of Tom Allen, who is currently the host of Shift on CBC Radio 2. An engaging musician, educator, author, and consultant, Allen teamed up with several musical friends and has been putting together a well-reviewed series of chamber concerts that are a unique combination of music and dramatic storytelling. Live Kicks regulars may recall that Allen and this same group of musicians performed their Judgment of Paris a few seasons back, to a delighted Civic Centre audience.
Weimar vividly evokes the 1920s and ‘30s as it tells the partly real and partly fictional story of two men, both of whom are sons of musical royalty. The narrative contrasts America’s emergence from the depths of the Great Depression with the dire fate of Europe as Germany sinks into the social and political turbulence that leads to the Second World War. At the heart of the story are two very different musical princes brought together by an act of fate during a time of increasing darkness and eventual chaos.
Featuring music by Richard Strauss, Fats Waller, Kurt Weill, Fletcher Henderson, Mozart, and Brahms – as well as some stunning original songs by the six-member orchestra/cast – Weimar is an unforgettable evening where music and history merge into an evocative and deeply moving experience.
