These exciting rock ‘n’ rollers have all the instrumental chops, onstage chemistry, and rock-star swagger you’d ever need for a wild good time at a nightclub. Cousin Harley, a.k.a. guitar star Paul Pigat, leads a rockabilly trio that blasts the audience with everything from vintage jump blues to cow-punk and country twang.

COUSIN HARLEY

with Pablo Euphoria & The Slinkies

“Cousin Harley” is the redneck alter ego of the extraordinarily talented and versatile guitarist Paul Pigat, a classically trained musician who is equally skilled at jazz, rockabilly, western swing, surf, and other idioms. He plays in several bands, but has a cult following for his rockabilly Cousin Harley trio, which takes the audience on a high-octane joy ride through irresistible musical terrain – everything from vintage jump blues and cow-punk shredders to twangy country classics and psychobilly bebop. Singing in both English and en français, click the photo to check out her video of “La boxe” set in Montreal.

MBIRA RENAISSANCE

with The Pickups

The rich polyrhythms of traditional Zimbabwean music form the heart of Mbira Renaissance, a seven-member Afro-pop ensemble from Edmonton. Driven by the beguiling tones of the mbira – a kalimba-style instrument featuring a wooden board fitted with approximately two dozen metal tines plucked with the thumbs – Mbira Renaissance perform a unique blend of Afro-fusion, reggae, jazz, and rock. Oh, and they’re throwing a party and there will be dancing!

Virtuosic trombone master Nick La Riviere and his high-energy septet perform a heady mix
of jazzy funk, R&B, Latin, and rock.

NICK LA RIVIERE BAND

with David L’Hirondelle

Trombone maestro Nick La Riviere is the master of many musical genres, and his virtuosic skill has made him a first-call horn guy for many different international touring bands including Locarno, Adonis Puentes, and Michael Kaeshammer. But Nick is most at home with his own high-energy septet, which performs a heady mix of jazzy funk, R&B, Latin, and rock. From playful Professor Longhair covers to spirited jazz-funk originals, this high-stepping musician puts the boss in brass!

7pm WEDNESDAY, JULY 24

A gifted singer and sax player, Lester McLean and his stellar quartet perform
soul, R&B, funk, and pop classics from the 1960s on.

LESTER McLEAN BAND

with  The Usual Suspects

A vibrant presence on Toronto’s music scene for nearly 30 years, jazz-trained Lester McLean always had broader, groove-based musical interests. As gifted a singer as he is a sax player, McLean and his stellar quartet perform an engaging mix of soul, R&B, funk, and pop classics from the 1960s through to the ‘80s, as well as his own originals. Sharing the frontline is long-time bandmate Michael Occhipinti, a Juno award-winning guitarist, and a friend of Summer Kicks! 7pm WEDNESDAY, JULY 31

Montreal’s Oktopus, one of Canada’s greatest purveyors of Eastern European music,
is an ebullient, technically brilliant octet that gets the audience dancing for sheer joy.

OKTOPUS

with Dave Whyte

Hailing from Montreal, Oktopus is one of Canada’s greatest purveyors of Eastern European music. From Ashkenazi-flavoured klezmer to the exotic rhythms and harmonies of the Balkans, this ebullient, technically brilliant octet invariably has audiences dancing for sheer joy. With their wide array of instruments, every performance is an effervescent musical travelogue – one that occasionally visits traditional Quebecois music. Wildly popular all across Canada, the Juno-nominated Oktopus is an uninhibited musical delight. Click the link to see why we’re gonna need some dress-up ‘clowns’ out dancing at this one!

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7

Tom Landa’s other great band, Locarno, is a funky sextet that celebrates the gamut
of Latin rhythms with exuberant virtuosity.

LOCARNO

with Parson Jazz Cooperative

Although best known as the front man for Vancouver’s The Paperboys, guitarist-vocalist Tom Landa has another great band, Locarno, that’s dedicated to exploring Landa’s half-Mexican roots. This innovative Latin ensemble focuses on traditional Mexican marimba music, Cuban son, Afro-pop, and several South American genres. Their CDs are justly acclaimed, but it’s those sizzling live shows where the six exuberantly virtuosic members of Locarno shine the brightest.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14

Mercy Funk is a groove-based, high-energy octet that plays an addictive blend of R&B,
urban soul grooves, gospel, and adult pop and rock.

MERCY FUNK

with From Mountains to Prairies

Despite the catchy name, Edmonton’s Mercy Funk is much more about “fun” than “funk” when it hits the bandstand, playing an addictive blend of R&B, urban soul grooves, adult pop and rock, gospel, and even some twangy country. Usually a quartet, their current touring band headed to Salmon Arm’s Roots & Blues fest is a high-energy 8-piece band augmented with great horn players ready to riff over all those percolating grooves.

Sounds like a party to close out our summer season!
