Dubbed “the goddess of Canadian blues” by CBC Radio’s Shelagh Rogers, Rita Chiarelli is a musical icon whose extraordinary vocal chops and on-stage charisma have thrilled audiences around the world.

Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Chiarelli got her start performing with legendary rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins in the early 1980s. Within a few years her songs ended up on the soundtrack to two Bruce McDonald films, and by 1992 she had a debut album out on Stony Plain Records.

Many nominations – and a few wins! – for Junos followed, and in the last decade the vivacious, born-to-perform Chiarelli has won every major Canadian blues award going, including multiple Maple Blues Awards, CBC’s Great Canadian Blues Award, and the Toronto Independent Music Awards. Long recognized as this country’s most accomplished female roots and blues performer, the woman with the astonishing vocal range and that big expressive voice has latterly been accorded the prestigious lifetime achievement award from Maple Blues.

Never predictable, Chiarelli recently made an award-winning CD of traditional Italian folk songs, collaborated with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, and made a music-themed documentary filmed entirely inside Louisiana’s Angola Prison.

But it’s her new project that will most delight her legion of fans. Chiarelli has put together an all-star, all-female band that stands at the intersection of blues and R&B. Rollicking, high-octane, and fabulously entertaining, it’s a feel-good revue that is the perfect showcase for this amazing singer and performer. From classic covers to evocative originals, expect a very special night of music. How blue can you get, indeed!
