Rick Scott – Nico Rhodes

“Roots & Grooves” = Funky joy…
Great good humour… Extraordinary musicianship!

7:30pm Feb 2 2019
Golden Civic Centre

American-born Rick Scott is an award-winning singer, songwriter and storyteller who has been an integral part of the Canadian cultural scene since he relocated here way back in 1972. Most often found with an Appalachian mountain dulcimer in his hands, Rick started out as one-third of those “infamous folkies” the fabled Pied Pumkin; eventually he discovered his primary calling as an enchantingly whimsical – and much-loved – children’s entertainer.

The other half of tonight’s remarkable duo is Nico Rhodes, a classical piano prodigy who spent his early years touring with his mom, the celebrated chanteuse, Joëlle Rabu. Destined to become a powerful force in the worlds of both musical theatre and jazz, Nico is a gifted arranger, a brilliant accompanist, and an astonishing performer in his own right as was experienced by our Civic Centre audience a couple of January’s ago performing with his mom Joëlle.

These two may seem like an unlikely duo, but their pairing up was far from an accident. When Nico was very young his primary musical influences were Beethoven, Oscar Peterson . . . and Rick Scott. At age 8 he wrote his hero a fan letter; by age 23 he was orchestrating Rick’s music for symphony. And now, thanks to the unique chemistry of a venerable folkie and a sophisticated young keyboard wizard, comes an unforgettable night of musical performance called Roots & Grooves.

With funky joy, great good humour, and irrepressible musical panache, Rick and Nico have been dazzling audiences wherever they’ve performed. They were rated “a force of nature” by Whistler Arts, at a show that earned them two standing ovations. This will be quite the party!
