Born and raised in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Leela Gilday is a hugely talented singer-songwriter from the Dene Nation whose songs evoke the beauty and challenge of her northern roots.
Blessed with a voice that comes straight from the heart, Gilday began singing at the tender age of eight. Now one of the North’s better-known performers, she has released four solo albums thus far, and racked up many thousands of kilometers on multiple tours across all the provinces and territories of Canada, and internationally to such countries as Japan, the United States, Greenland, and New Zealand.
The passionate, open-voiced Gilday sings about identity, death, love, and life with a soulfulness and honesty that reaches Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal audience members with equal intensity. Over a two-decade career, Gilday has earned many awards, including a Juno, two Western Canadian Music Awards, and recognition as Aboriginal Female Entertainer of the Year.
Backed by a four-piece band that offers a unique blend of folk, roots, and traditional sounds, Gilday combines insight with humour, and a concern for social justice with a keen awareness of the simple joys of being alive.
