Longtime Nelson residents Laura Landsberg and Allison Girvan are considered the two best singers in the West Kootenays, and when they started singing together 15 years ago the chemistry was immediate. “We realized we could sing in unison and in perfect harmony . . . which is pretty rare,” says Landsberg. “It always feels special for us to sing together, whether it’s as a duo or in a choir.”

Part of their charm is how these two vocalists come from such different backgrounds. Girvan is a singer, arranger, and choral director who’s been a featured soloist with such ensembles as musica intima, the Elektra Women’s Choir, and the Vancouver Chamber Choir. She has worked with Canada’s esteemed “Celtic Tenor” John McDermott, and sung on stage in everything from Showboat to Sweeney Todd.

While Girvan comes from a mostly classical realm, the equally virtuosic – and extensively recorded – Landsberg brings an earthier sensibility that encompasses country, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, and jazz (her father is legendary trombone master Ian McDougall).

There was a long gap when these two friends weren’t able to sing together, and that prompted a special “reunion” show a little over a year ago in their hometown. Their aptly named It Feels Like Home performance was a sensational evening of progressive folk, bluegrass, and world music where gorgeous singing was backed up by an all-acoustic quartet featuring piano, guitar, mandolin, bass, and violin. With singers this talented and flexible, the musical expressiveness is almost limitless.

Laura played Summer Kicks a few summers ago with a crack R&B band singing some soul standards. Allison has brought her renowned youth choir Corazon to Golden before and performed at the Civic Centre in 2016 in the lead with Hiromita Ida in his dance theatre piece called Birthday Present for Myself .

Find out for yourself just how special Home is when Landsberg and Girvan bring their magic to Golden.
