There was a line-up outside the gallery this morning for close to an hour before opening and when the doors opened we went as quickly as we could handling people at the ticket desk and on the phone. By 11:30am all tickets were sold. This is a first for us. We expected to sell out but not on the first morning. We felt quite overwhelmed and hope we did as best we could to serve everyone.

Some disappointed folks will ask why not add an extra show? That’s just not possible. Mr. Earle is on a tour of playing shows each night in a different town. The schedule has been locked in for a couple of months. He comes to us from Banff the night before and then the next night he plays in Lethbridge.

It’s important for our members and community to know that even at a sell out, KHC will run a deficit on this show. It’s not a money-maker for us. However, we made a decision that the ticket prices at $45 and $35 for members was a fair price to charge for our Golden economy. We felt that this was a show that would sell out and that the community would be proud to say that they saw Steve Earle at our newly restored Golden Civic Centre.

Like the fantastic LIVE Kicks EXTRA show last night with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, KHC will continue to keep our ear to the ground to bring in a great and diverse line-up of music, theatre and dance artists to the Civic Centre stage. Some artists, you will not be familiar with, but we hope you continue to trust in our choices and know that we’re very proud of every artist and show that we put on throughout the year.

DECK: How I Instigated Then Overcame an Existential Crisis Through Home Improvement.

You will realize that you can do it way better than this guy and be so inspired to get up early on Sunday morning and get ‘er done!

“When things go bad—life-endingly bad—people with high enough credit limits often like to go off and find themselves. And in DECK, pink-slipped day trader Cliv (writer-performer Lucas Myers), giving up on paying off half a million in credit card debt at McDonald’s, does just this by declaring bankruptcy and transplanting himself and his severely suburban children to BC’s Interior. There they buy a dilapidated house with a structurally unsound deck. In true finding-oneself fashion, Cliv seizes on rebuilding this deck as the key to putting his life back in order. This is what a Wall Street crisis does to people. And trust me, it’s funny.

“The humour in Deck comes from a mixture of Cliv’s gross incompetence at everything from parenting to cutting wood, the Bob and Doug McCanadianness of his new neighbours, and Corey (an unemployed carpenter who takes it upon himself to fix both Cliv and Cliv’s deck) and the dark, bizarre speculations Myers thankfully indulges in in the script.

Deck’s turning point sticks out as an innovative and cost-efficient advance in actor-audience relations. Myers, as Corey, actually conscripts a small work crew of audience members to finish Cliv’s deck: we’re talking power drills and everything. On opening night, he had this adorable young couple haul wood onstage from the wings: they even cleaned up the mess from the power saw . . . because that’s the right thing to do. Almost two years in the making, we’ve just uploaded the Civic Centre Restoration & Celebration video to YouTube. This is a documentary of the construction process and the week long opening celebrations. The photography is by Bill Usher and Claire Dibble and the editing is by Matt Coté.

The “restoration” portion of the video was shown during the Opening Night Gala on Dec. 29th, 2011. Since then, we’ve been working on adding in images from the Tuesday through Saturday night new year’s eve celebrations.

In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion World Tour, the Rick Hansen Foundation launched the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay on August 24, 2011 in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador. This time, one Man In Motion will be represented and celebrated by many in motion, as 7,000 participants from across Canada who have made a difference in their own communities and in the lives of others will walk, wheel or run in the nine-month, 12,000 kilometre Relay that retraces the route of Rick’s original Tour, and will stop over in Golden today and tomorrow.
