Claire deBoer soaks in a ray of sun during a break in the typical inclement Bugaboo weather with her companions, Stephanie von Neudegg and acmg guide Tim McAllister atop Eastpost Spire. This was part of a Conrad Kain Centennial Society outing to teach basic climbing skills and introduce teens from the Columbia valley to the legacy of Kain in 2009.

Bugaboo Provincial Park climbing ranger Tay Hanson strolls past Conrad Kain hut, named for the Austrian mountain guide who led the first ascent of Bugaboo Spire (upper right). In Kain’s day, he and his clients needed to camp with, and look after their pack horses in the valley bottom at the head of Bugaboo Creek, making their climbing days much longer than today.
