The impeccable granite and fantastic position of the Bugaboos draws climbers from all over the world to test their skill and to experience this magnificent mountain landscape. Occasionally mishaps happen. On a descent of the Kain route on Bugaboo Spire, a climber had his ankle pinned beneath a massive granite boulder that slid down onto him.

As a Parks Canada rescuer, I was part of a rescue team that brought hydraulic jacks and equipment to the scene to help extricate the climber who had been pinned for several hours. Here he is being evacuated by heli-sling with Snowpatch Spire in the background. The patient was then flown directly to hospital where timely surgery helped save his foot and allow for another day in the mountains.
