Rob Owens makes a retreat from the West face of Snowpatch Spire during a summer storm.

This picture is from a larger series called Shelter From the Storm which dwells on the intense, sometimes debilitating emotions that accompany my own experience of climbing in the mountains. The series might be described as documentary in nature but it is one in which I choose to favor those elements that speak of the “interior conversation” that accompanies the act of venturing beyond one’s own comfort zone.

As a photographer, I’m interested in the very basic idea that simplification, or taking things out of the frame, may help to more strongly express an idea. A Bugaboo experience, beautifully reduced to ice anchored granite spires, makes it almost easy to do this.
