Canada Film Day celebrations – Wed. April 19
Here at KHC, we’re pleased to announce that FILM Kicks will be celebrating Canada Film Day on Wednesday April 19 with a mini-festival of Canadian film for the 150th birthday celebrations. And it’s all FREE!
With support from REEL Canada we will present an early evening 5:30pm showing of Nettie Wilde’s award winning documentary KONELINE: our land beautiful … a sensual, cinematic celebration of northwestern British Columbia, and all the dreamers who move across it.
Then, with major support from TIFF film Circuit, we have scheduled a 7:30pm showing of the award winning ATANARJUAT: THE FAST RUNNER
“Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner” is an epic film made by and about the Inuit peoples of the Canadian arctic, telling a story of a crime that ruptures the trust within a closely knit group, and how justice is achieved and healing begins. Director Zacharias Kunuk and his writer, Paul Apak Angilin, collected oral versions of an Inuit legend rom several elders, collated them into a story, submitted the story to the elders for suggestions and then filmed it as a collaborative expression.
Tickets are FREE but must be picked up in advance at AGOG while they last. They are available from Monday, March 13 on.
But, we’re not done yet! KHC is also partnering with REEL Canada 150 and Golden Secondary School to offer an afternoon showing at the Golden Cinema earlier in the afternoon. GSS students and staff have chosen the Canadian film Breakaway… a touching story of growing up Canadian in an immigrant family, in which Raj (Vinay Virmani) must balance the wishes of his Sikh parents against his dreams of playing hockey. English-language high school classes will watch Breakaway and then log in to RCtv for an interactive webcast with Vinay Virmani – the star and cowriter of Breakaway – and other surprise guests. Innovative online platforms will provide engaging, fun activities, and schools can even compete in real time on a national leaderboard, updated live.
