Snow King’s Free Creative Workshops

We’ve organized some FREE creative workshops for you to sign up for. With funding support
from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) we are presenting three creative workshops over the next two weekends. They’re all FREE! All materials are provided. Come prepared to have fun and be creative! All you need to do is register below.

1. Canada 150 Years – Let’s Animate it; Eh!
When & where: 12 noon Sunday February 5
Snow King’s Play House in the Civic Centre
Facilitator:  Barry Johnson

Within this 4-hour workshop participants can expect to:

  • Learn how to make a small paper zoetrope* and, with just a few simple drawing skills, create short exciting animations
  • Learn how to build a large zoetrope that can become part of our Snow King Mask Parade
  • Select an aspect of Canada’s (or Golden’s) history to feature in a series of silhouette drawings that are animated with a large zoetrope
  • Brainstorm with other participants about how best to include a series of large zoetrope animations in the Snow King’s MasqueParade

Limited to 12 participants, ages 16 – adult.

*Zoetrope: 19th-century optical toy consisting of a cylinder with a series of pictures on the inner surface that, when viewed through slits with the cylinder rotating, give an impression of continuous motion.

2. Make your own silly creature string puppet.
When & where: 1pm holiday Monday February 13
Snow King’s Play House in the Civic Centre
Facilitator:  Will Cunningham

Workshop Description:
Within this 4-hour workshop participants can expect to:

  • Learn how to make a simple “head and shoulders” style string puppet… a wild and silly creature from the valley… animal or human!
  • Learn how to make your puppet walk the walk
  • Brainstorm with others how we can parade our puppets through the MasqueParade pageant on Sat. Feb 18 in Spirit Square

Limited to 12 participants, ages 12 – adult.

3. Create the “Kicking Horse” puppet and costume and bring him to life!

The participants will create and animate a big “kicking horse” puppet that will come to life during the MasqueParade pageant in Spirit Square on Feb. 18

Sunday, Feb. 5: noon to 4pm:

  • Working on a skeleton created by Will, participants will create the physical body of the  horse with papier maché

Thursday, Feb. 9: afternoon/evening TBC

  • Participants will paint and costume the horse

Sunday, Feb. 12: noon

  • Participants will brainstorm and create the skit with the horse and characters telling the story of how our river got it’s name – performed at MasqueParade pageant on Sat. Feb 18 in Spirit Square

Limited to 6 participants, ages 12 – adult.
