Kicking Horse Culture and the Art Gallery of Golden are very pleased to invite you to meet Roger Laurilla Friday Oct 14 from 5 to 7pm for the reception of the opening of Real & Wild Light Photography. We’ll have some complimentary appies at the opening and you’ll have a chance to speak with Roger about his travels and images. All are welcome. Please spread the word.
Raised in Revelstoke B.C., Roger was exposed to the mountains at an early age. His interests in mountaineering and photography grew simultaneously. “As I began to explore the mountains I saw a lot of areas and natural wonders that I wanted to capture on film. Climbing and skiing became the means to see the mountains and photograph them in the way I wanted.”
In 1979 Roger started working for Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) in the Bugaboos. He developed an interest in the mountains which later turned into a professional career. In 1986 he became a member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, and has since become an Internationally Certified Mountain Guide. After 12 years of managing CMH’s Monashee Lodge, Roger now owns and operates Battle Abbey Back Country ski touring hut based out of Golden BC. Throughout the rest of the year he can be found working on photography projects and guiding private groups in Canada and internationally.
Photography has long been a strong creative source for Roger, his images have been published in many magazines such as; Canadian Geographic, Beautiful BC, Ski Canada, Powder Magazine Climbing, Rock and Ice, Couloir and Back Country. Some of the many books that his images have appeared in are; The Selkirks, The Bugaboos, Place Names in the Canadian Alps, Summits and Secrets Canadian Summits. Most of Roger’s photography is documenting outdoor sports and mountain related subjects in Canada and the US. His photography and guiding have taken him to South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, New Zealand and Antarctica.
